 Little help 2

So this is my second post on this, but I"ll explain again since this will be first in order on the page which can be confusing when you think about it like this.

Anyways, I'm preaching at sectional Pow Wow this weekend and I need a little help with illustrations for my sermons.  I have plenty of serious and even interesting stuff but I'd like some funny stuff too.  I'm speaking to boys 9-14 or so and I really think it would help keep them interested.  Normally I don't have trouble adding humor to my sermons .. I preach to Youth all the time after all, but I just can't seem to be able to think of anything for these that fits and is really funny.

I'd appreciate any help in this area so thanks in advance.

Oh, and this is the sermon for the seconf night, "Transformed" is for the first night.

Glory to Glory

2 Corinthians 3:7-18

7Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, fading though it was, 8will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? 9If the ministry that condemns men is glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness! 10For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory. 11And if what was fading away came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts!

12Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold. 13We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to keep the Israelites from gazing at it while the radiance was fading away. 14But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. 15Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. 16But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

I-                   Introduction

a.       Does anyone know the name of the power source the transformers run off of?

b.      Energon fuels the robots in disguise, but Christians are fueled by something as well.

c.       Acts 1:8

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

d.      Our power is the Holy Spirit.  We need to be full of the Spirit or we are like a dead battery.  They take up space but that’s about it.

e.       Lets compare a dead or dieing person with one full of power

II-                Unchanging verses transforming

a.       Last night we learned about how the Spirit transforms our lives but lets look at the unchanging lives we can expect without the Power of the Holy Spirit

b.      1 Corinthians 3:7&8

Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, fading though it was, will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious?

                                                               i.      Laws engraved in stone cannot change or be changed without destroying the stone.

ii.      Lives can be built the same way.

iii.      We must be willing to be transformed by the Spirit instead.

c.       1 Corinthians 3:18

And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

                                                               i.      We are being transformed by the Spirit into someone more like Jesus.

III-              Condemning verses bringing righteousness

a.       2 Corinthians 3:9

If the ministry that condemns men is glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness!

                                                               i.      The law can do nothing but show fault.  It cannot make us better

ii.      Dead and dieing Christians do that same thing

iii.      How many times have we all been condemned by some bitter “Christian” because they cannot grow closer to Jesus since they have cut themselves off from the Power?

b.      2 Corinthians 3:16&17

But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

                                                               i.      There is freedom in Christ through the power of the Spirit.

ii.      We are free to choose do what is right

                                                            iii.      This makes us righteous.

iv.      We can only do this because the veil is taken away so that we might see God face to face and experience being full of the Spirit

IV-             Fading verses Growing intensity

a.       2 Corinthians 3:10&11

For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory. And if what was fading away came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts!

                                                               i.      The glory of the Old law faded because it kept men apart from God

ii.      Moses went up to the mountain to be with God but could not keep going up

iii.      Instead they had to build a special place to keep God separate from them because they were afraid and because they were not changed.

iv.      We can be the same though.

                                                             v.      We can receive the touch of the Spirit but not go back regularly.

vi.      The glory will fade from our faces as we lose power.

vii.      Instead we should continually seek the Power that is the Spirit then:

b.      2 Corinthians 3:12&13

Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold. We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to keep the Israelites from gazing at it while the radiance was fading away.

                                                               i.      Our hope, our faith, will keep us full of the Spirit

ii.      The Glory of God will reflect more intensely upon us every day

c.       2 Corinthians 3:18

But we all, with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory just as from the Lord, the Spirit.

V-                Conclusion

a.       We can either be dead powerless Christians

                                                               i.      People that are more bitter the older we get

ii.      People that cannot be changed

iii.      People that lose our intensity and fire

b.      Or we can be people that are full of the Spirit

                                                               i.      People that change to become more like Christ

ii.      People full of peace and joy

iii.      People with a growing fire within us

c.       The fact is we need the Spirit

                                                               i.      We need Him to call us so we might be saved

ii.      We need Him to fill us with power to help others

iii.      We need Him to make us more like Christ

iv.      We need Him to fill us with peace and joy

d.      If you didn’t respond last night but feel that call right now then please respond to this call

e.       If you are a Christian and have not been filled with the Spirit, then don’t wait

f.        If you are full of the Spirit then take this time to be renewed.  Let the glory of God shine upon your face and transform your life from Glory to Glory.

 Little Help?

K so I'm preaching at sectional Pow Wow this weekend and I"m having a little trouble with my sermons.  I actually have the basic stuff finished, but I"m trying to find illustrations for them.  I have plenty of serious stuff, but I'm speaking to bous between 9 and 14 or so and I'd like to have some good funny stuff to keep their intrest.  I thought I'd post my two sermons and ask if anyone could help me out with humourous illustrations for the sermons.  Thanks a bunch

BTW this is the first night and "Glory to Glory" is the second night.

Transformed

I-                   Introduction

a.       Transformers the movie

                                                               i.      The transformers came with a single purpose

                                                             ii.      They became something useful

iii.      They changed into what was needed when needed

iv.      They were not of this world even if they were in it.

II-                Acceptable to God

a.       Romans 12:1

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.

b.      Living Sacrifice

                                                               i.      Sacrifices always cost

ii.      A living sacrifice cost our lives as we live them

iii.      This makes us holy and pleasing to God

iv.      It is how we worship Him in Spirit and in truth

1.      John 4:19-24

19"Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet. 20Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem."

21Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."

c.       Be transformed

                                                               i.      Romans 12:2

.                                Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

ii.      We can only become living sacrifices when we are transformed

iii.      We can only be transformed when our minds are made new

iv.      Then we can know the will of God which is

1.      good

2.      please

3.      perfect

III-              All one body

a.       This is brings us together with one purpose one Spirit, one body

b.      Be humble

                                                               i.      Romans 12:3

3For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of

yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you.

1.      When we are transformed we will stop building ourselves up

2.      We will move in faith

c.       Be one body

                                                               i.      Romans 12:4&5

Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

1.      If we are in Christ, then we are one

2.      If we are one then we belong to each other

3.      If we belong to each other then we should be useful to each other

d.      Be useful

                                                               i.      Romans 12:6-8

We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.

1.      In everything the Spirit uses us for, let us be used correctly.

2.      Consider the way the Message reads

If you preach, just preach God's Message, nothing else; if you help, just help, don't take over; if you teach, stick to your teaching; if you give encouraging guidance, be careful that you don't get bossy; if you're put in charge, don't manipulate; if you're called to give aid to people in distress, keep your eyes open and be quick to respond; if you work with the disadvantaged, don't let yourself get irritated with them or depressed by them. Keep a smile on your face.

3.      We must be used correctly to be useful

IV-             Conclusion

a.       If we must be used correctly to be useful, and if we must be useful to each other to be in one body, and we must be one to be humble, and we must be humble if we are transformed, and we must be transformed to be in the will of God,

b.      Then we better get started

c.       If there is only one body in Christ, then there are really only two camps here

                                                               i.      The first camp is the camp of Christ

1.      This camp is being transformed every day

2.      This camp is becoming humble

3.      This camp is trying to be useful

4.      This camp is in the will of God

ii.      The second camp is the enemy of God

1.      This camp still thinks the same way as the enemy

2.      This camp is selfish

3.      This camp is interested in using

4.      This camp is not in the will of God

d.      Right now you have a choice

                                                               i.      What camp do you wish to be in?

ii.      If you choose God then make yourself a living sacrifice

1.      Give you life to God and live it in a way that others will know.

2.      Be in the world, but not a part of it.

3.      Be holy

iii.      If you choose God then be transformed

1.      Don’t leave this council fire the same person

2.      Become someone better, closer to God

3.      Let God use you.

4.      Find the will of God for your life and dedicate yourself to it.

 New Years/Try out sermon

The Humble Servant

John 13:1-17

Here are some New Year’s Resolutions that you can keep.

1. Gain weight. At least 30 pounds.
2. Stop exercising. Waste of time.
3. Read less. Makes you think.
4. Watch more TV. I've been missing some good stuff.
5. Procrastinate more. Starting tomorrow.
6. Stop bringing lunch from home: I should eat out more.
7. Get more toys.
8. Get further in debt.
9. Don't believe politicians.
10. Focus on the faults of others.
And...
11. Never make New Year's resolutions again.

What a unique opportunity to deliver the last message of the year old year and the first message of the new year.  It truly is a humbling experience.  Still, it is not near as humbling as the story of Christ.

Christ who was with God and was God, according to John 1:1, made himself servant to all.

Philippians 2:5-8 says it like this

5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,

6who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,

7but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.

8Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

-The Glory of Christ

-The humility of Christ

            -John 13:1-11

1It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love.

2The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. 3Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

6He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?"

7Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand."

8"No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet."  Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me."

9"Then, Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!"

10Jesus answered, "A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you." 11For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not everyone was clean.

Please note

-Jesus, the host, did the servant’s job.

-Explain the position of Peter as the one who should have done this act.

-Jesus even washed the feet of the one who would betray him.

How are we to act?

            -John 13:12-17

12When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them. 13"You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. 15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

            -Luke 22:24-30

24Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. 25Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. 27For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. 28You are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, 30so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

How can we not serve, when the mast, redeemer, creator of all served?

In what ways can we serve?

-Serve the “least” of these

                        -Mark 9:33-37

- 33They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, "What were you arguing about on the road?" 34But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.

35Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, "If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all."

36He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37"Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me."

A young boy was walking home through the park after attending a Sunday School class. Somehow, he couldn't stop thinking about the lesson for that day on Jesus' "Parable of the Last Judgment." What impressed him most was when the teacher said, "When you give something to another person, you're really giving it to Jesus" ...
As he continued through the park, he noticed an old woman sitting on a bench. She looked lonely and hungry. So he sat down next to her, took from his pocket the package of "M & M's" he had been saving and offered some to her. She accepted with a smile. He liked her smile so much that after she had eaten the M & M's, he gave her more. This time they exchanged smiles and, for a while, they sat together in silence, just smiling at each other. Finally, the boy got up to leave and, as he began to walk away, he turned, ran back to the bench, and gave the woman a big hug. And she gave him her very best smile. When he arrived home, his mother saw a big smile on his face and asked, "What made you so happy today?" He said, "I shared my M & M's with Jesus. And she has a great smile."
Meanwhile, the old woman returned to her little apartment where she lived with her sister. "You're all smiles," said the sister, "what made you so happy today?" To which she replied, "I was sitting in the park, eating M & M's with Jesus. And, you know, he looks a lot younger than I expected."

            -Make yourself humble.

-remember that Peter should have washed the feet, but there was too much pride.

- Illustration from the life of Joseph.

-Joseph was cast into a pit by his brothers and sold into slavery.

-Joseph made himself a servant, so much more than a mere slave, and so rose to a position of power only to be tossed into jail.

-Even in jail his servant’s heart brought him into power and he was eventually raised to the right hand of power over all of Egypt.

                                    - Illustration from the life of William J Seymour

-Studied under Charles Parham of the Topeka Kansas Pentecostal revival in a school in Houston, TX where he could not “attend” classes and so was employed as a janitor and listened to the lectures from outside the open door to the classroom.

-Seymour went on to preach on Azusa street in LA and from there the Pentecostal movement spread across the country and to the rest of the world.

-Where would we be without this servant leader?

-If we are all leaders, then we will have some pretty strange looking lines.

- A young woman wanted to go to college, but her heart sank when she read the question on the application blank that asked, "Are you a leader?" Being both honest and conscientious, she wrote, "No," and returned the application, expecting the worst. To her surprise, she received this letter from the college: "Dear Applicant: A study of the application forms reveals that this year our college will have 1,452 new leaders. We are accepting you because we feel it is imperative that they have at least one follower."

            -Make yourself willing.

-If not me then who, if not now then when?

                                    - Illustration from the life of D. L. Moody

- A large group of European pastors came to one of D. L. Moody’s Northfield Bible Conferences in Massachusetts in the late 1800s. Following the European custom of the time, each guest put his shoes outside his room to be cleaned by the hall servants overnight. But of course this was America and there were no hall servants.

Walking the dormitory halls that night, Moody saw the shoes and determined not to embarrass his brothers. He mentioned the need to some ministerial students who were there, but met with only silence or pious excuses. Moody returned to the dorm, gathered up the shoes, and, alone in his room, the world’s only famous evangelist began to clean and polish the shoes. Only the unexpected arrival of a friend in the midst of the work revealed the secret.

When the foreign visitors opened their doors the next morning, their shoes were shined. They never know by whom. Moody told no one, but his friend told a few people, and during the rest of the conference, different men volunteered to shine the shoes in secret. Perhaps the episode is a vital insight into why God used D. L. Moody as He did. He was a man with a servant’s heart and that was the basis of his true greatness.

            -Make yourself available.

-If none knows you are willing, then how can you serve?

- Our church was saddened to learn this week of the death of one of our most valued members, Someone Else.
Someone's passing creates a vacancy that will be difficult to fill. Else has been with us for many years and for every one of those years, Someone did far more than a normal person's share of the work. Whenever there was a job to do, a class to teach, or a meeting to attend, one name was on everyone's list, "Let Someone Else do it." Whenever leadership was mentioned, this wonderful person was looked to for inspiration as well as results; "Someone Else can work with that group."
It was common knowledge that Someone Else was among the most liberal givers in our church. Whenever there was a financial need, everyone just assumed Someone Else would make up the difference.
Someone Else was a wonderful person; sometimes appearing superhuman. Were the truth known, everybody expected too much of Someone Else. Now Someone Else is gone! We wonder what we are going to do.
Someone Else left a wonderful example to follow, but who is going to follow it? Who is going to do the things Someone Else did?
When you are asked to help this year, remember - we can't depend on Someone Else anymore.

 God's gift to us

Gift of Love

Gifts of the Holy Spirit: 1 Corinthians 13

A Christmas/New Year’s Sermon

Introduction:

-Good gifts from our friends and family.

                -Matthew 7:9-11

-  9"Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

-Gifts that God gives to us. (they don’t break and no batteries required.)

                                -John 3:16

- 16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

                        -Ephesians 4:11

- 11It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers,

                        -Luke 24:49

- 49I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."

                        1 Corinthians 12:7-11

7Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.

Wait there is more.

                -1 Corinthians 13

-  1If I speak in the tongues[a] of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames,[b] but have not love, I gain nothing.

4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
